Whirly Week

My sister's been exploring London. Wednesday, I took her to Blackheath, across the heath to Greenwich Park, visited the Prime Meridien, down through the park into Greenwich itself, over to the pier where we decided not to take a short boat ride down the Thames to do the south bank river walk.

She's visited museums and galleries and has had a lovely time, and last night, the ESDs and I took her to LUSH for the first time. She was happy. She was predictable. She spent money.

Tonight, we're going to have a quiet night at home (and catch the repeat of last Saturday's Dr Who!), but tomorrow we're thinking seriously about going to see Coriolanus at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre. Has anybody seen this production? We'd be doing the groundling thing, so £5 tickets!

I have been very tired this week, juggling visit and working. Yesterday I nearly fell asleep at my desk. It goes without saying that I have probably missed catching up on other people's LJs, so please let me know if there's something you want me to see, read, comment on, whatever.

I know nothing of the production, but I had wonderful fun going to the Globe back in 1998, and if you can, I suggest you do go.

I had seats that where the veiw was obstructed, so I chose to be a groundling. When the rest of the family wimped out half way through, I put up a fuss. "No way in hell I'm leaving halfway through this play." And then my Dad stayed with me for the rest of it. Granted, it was a different play, and I'm sure the company must have changed a bit, but dude, you should so totally go.

*bounces excitedly for you*

I haven't seen that production (I think the Globe only opened last week for this season) but the Globe *rocks* -I've been there both as a groundling and with posher tickets, and it's been excellent both times. Take along something waterproof to wear -you probably know by now how untrustworthy London weather is, and I don't think you're allowed umbrellas. :) Enjoy!

Yay!

What little_cinnamon said, plus if you think you'll have any worries about remaining standing (possibly without anything near you to lean on aside from each other) for two hours plus, then you might reconsider seats.

I've seen a couple of productions there (one as a groundling, but I got up near the stage and could lean on that) and a couple sitting in the "posh" seats (around £20 a seat I seem to recall). You *can* hire cushions for the "posh" seats (because otherwise they are hard hard very hard wooden benches!) and they are *really* worth the money (or bring your own cushions!). The restaurant in the Globe is good, but quite expensive. The pub nearby on the river (the Founders Arms) is very pleasant, but it's £3 for a bowl of chips or £8 for a burger. There are lots of cheaper cafes and pubs within 10 minutes walk.

Here I am reminding you again that Caroline is playing in Greenwich this weekend and early next week.

Like others, I haven't seen Coriolanus but have been to the Globe before. Wot they said. I've never tried being a groundling, but yes, seats are hard and narrow. Also snacks and drinks are expensive - take your own.
Do not go into the gift shop bearing a credit card, you will regret it.

Reach the Globe early tonight so that you can stand leaning against the stage. I've been a groundling a number of times. (I haven't been there yet this season, though.)
