I'm in a very bad mood,
And so I think it wise
To chop all of my thoughts up
And serve them up bite-size.
With no regard for better verse
And eyes on the banal,
I plan to drivel endlessly
And thus annoy you all!

So if you're feeling brave enough,
I dare you! Follow me!
Post and comment bilge and poppycock,
The tripe will set you free!

Explanation in prose.

I'm in a really terrible mood today. When I feel that a day is going to be bad, depressive-harper-style, one thing I do is try to do as many nice things for other people as possible, hoping that giving something good to the universe will encourage it to give something good to me. Sympathetic magic. This morning, I began by buying chocolates and pecan plaits for my coworkers and sending cheery messages to everybody in my family via SMS. When I got around to [livejournal.com profile] pola_bear, I was inspired to write her two SMSes full of doggerel verse-- I'm not sure why; it just came out that way. It made me feel so good to send her two messages full of nonsensical crap that I'm going to make it my business to write as much horrific non-poetry as possible today, in and out of the astounding amount of work I have to do. If you think it might put a smile on your face, please do the same! :-)

ETA: I found it liberating not to edit any of this or use a rhyming dictionary, dictionary or thesaurus of any kind; the cliches flow more freely when the brain is given no choice. ;-)

The tricky thing with doggerel
Isn't just the timing
But making sure it almost scans
And alternate lines are rhyming.

My day so far's been going well
But I think this might not linger
My brand new code won't work until
A colleague extracts his finger...

I'd love to leave a post in poem
Alas, I'm not inspired.
T'is been a while, since I wrote thus
Besides, I'm kinda tired.

I thought, however, though I may
Not have the skills of thou
Your post has cheered me verrily.
Okay, I'm stopping now...

When your day is so dire that the fire in your blood turns to mud and your muse is deserting
You can play with a verse that is worse than your best as a jest to diffuse all the hurting.
For a rhyme that you'd spurn or a turn of a phrase that is lazy and lame and uneasy
Is no crime when you're stressed and hard-pressed and you long for a song that is shamelessly cheesy.

I could post some verse for you
In sympathy, you poor thing
Alas! I find that here it is to
Early in the morning

And though the sun is rising now
The sky is calm and red
I'm more inclined to figure how
To get back into bed

I did not see this until after
I'd done my stress-task for the day
And when I saw, this caused much laughter
so it is "thank you" now I say
to you and all those you inspired
be they happy, bored or tired. :)

In your honor I
Shall write some free verse
Or
As my friends call it
Text written funny as if random line breaks
And real deep feeling make something poetry because I am too lazy to actually learn the formal rules of poetry.
But since it's art.
I can do
What I
want.

I thought this was the perfect way
To start my time diurnal
But my response, to spread the play
Is posted in my Journal (http://markbernstein.livejournal.com/86324.html)

Here is one

I know you,
Or think I do,
Through all your sounds of beauty.

But I have a cold
That's two days old
So I think I'll just stay ... mutey.

I could write content, I suppose
If I chose to write in prose
But things just go from bad to worse
When I chose to write in verse
You might hear something good from me
If I wrote in melody
But nothing comes out right, you see,
When I try to rhyme with stuff.

I couldn't manage to rhyme [livejournal.com profile] telynor
With anything but "Eleanor"!

Every dog must have his day,
not sun nor rain shall interfere
and so it seems that this meme may
be unleashed for all to hear

So prose must yield its normal sway
for horrid puns and cants appear
and dogs may howl and dogs may bay
'round prose and syntax's mournful bier

oh mourn ye all, let none be gay
whilst hopeful poets make it clear
that long the minutes of the day
are felt when doggerel is here

posted and linked to my journal, thanks for the perk up...

"Real poetry" I cannot write
and lyrics, they elude me
But doggerel, so fun and light,
comes tripping from my pen, whee!

(crossposted to my LJ to spread the fun)

I hope your day is improving! :-)

so lyrics shall suffer no wrongs
at my hands 'till the month of december

This morning your text cheered me,
Though to reply I had no time,
Though I think some folk now fear me,
For my laughing at your rhyme.

I hope that things get better
and it will not be too long,
and in 3 weeks I would bet ya,
We'll be gossiping in song.

I hope that your day's gotten better
Since starting this writing attack
To help us our words to unfetter
And help better moods to come back

May your day and your mood both get brighter
May your good deeds all bear pleasant fruit
May your heart and your mind become lighter
May your muse when you wish not be mute

While surfing on the web I found
Your doggerel invite
And so to write one I am bound
If just to be polite

By sympathetic magic one
Can lift a spirit high
So "Presto Chango, have some fun!
There is no need to cry."

A fortune cookie of the mind
Zen topping on desert
You tell us that you often find
It eases where you hurt

This melancholy mood - begone!
Be banished, I declare
Let rhyme and rhythm carry on
Through friendship everywhere.

I never have seen such a witty retort
by the bearer of such bleak tidings
so now I shall have to let myself resort
to an uninspired log of my findings

Doggerel, cant, changing prose into verse
are a sight akin to turnips bleeding
but nevertheless, you should know that it's worse
to give twisted words their reading

but beyond, you might say, is the child-play game
of the act of recording one's muse
how frustrating it is then to know it's so lame
that one must know the tools for one's use!

Now, Doggerel Day is so ripe for a lay
that it's confusing to know where to look
so I'll end this small rhyme now, and simply say...
it's a doggone good hook for a book!

My doggerel is free verse
They're one and both the same
Because I write it any way
Despite that no-one's paying.

Sorry to hear about your mood
When I feel like that I turn to food
or rather chocolate to be precise
It's probably my biggest vice
You've certainly spawned a ton of verse
some short, some long, none could be worse
than mine as I ramble on and on
I'm sure you wish that I was gone
but you started it, so here's this rhyme
not my best but I hadn't time
I beg you to imagine a happy tune
Many hugs, and feel better soon!
