Welcome, Yule-- Harper's Traditional Winter Solstice Post

The Shortest Day

And so the Shortest Day came and the year died
And everywhere down the centuries of the snow-white world
Came people singing, dancing,
To drive the dark away.
They lighted candles in the winter trees;
They hung their homes with evergreen;
They burned beseeching fires all night long
To keep the year alive.
And when the new year's sunshine blazed awake
They shouted, revelling.
Through all the frosty ages you can hear them
Echoing behind us - listen!
All the long echoes, sing the same delight,
This Shortest Day,
As promise wakens in the sleeping land:
They carol, feast, give thanks,
And dearly love their friends,
And hope for peace.
And now so do we, here, now,
This year and every year.
Welcome Yule!

Susan Cooper

Welcome, Yule.

I love you...and I know I say this to you every year. *chuckle* This poem...this one poem is likely to bring tears no matter what I'm doing or going through or whatever as it brings the memories of a very special year and a very special production.

Today I had to pass actually reading it because I *am* too emotional today, but I wanted to make my annual comment. *grin* and remind myself to read it when I'm not at work.

Thank you so much for sharing this poem. I typed it up and made copies to pass out at our Yule feast last night. My copy is going into my book of Shadows. Everyone loved it and we never would have known about it if you hadn't decided to share.

Yule Blessings!

I'm glad you enjoyed it. I've been a fan of Susan Cooper's fiction for a long time (I'm one of those people who re-reads The Dark Is Rising every year at this time), and I first heard this at The Christmas Revels in Boston many years ago. It's been part of my life ever since.
