Here's the scoop, in case you haven't seen it yet or need reminding:
What? Me, guest at Folkmob, held on Wednesday nights at the Tudor Barn in Eltham. See Folkmob's web site for details about the venue and directions and all.
When? Wednesday, 7 December, 8:30 pm (doors'll open earlier than that, but nothing ever starts until 8:45ish usually). The show will go on until eleven, if not a little later.
How do you get there?
Train will probably be easiest for those of you within reach of London transport; everybody else will have to charter a jet or something. ;-) Trains to Eltham go fairly regularly from the usual Eastish London stations: Charing Cross, London Bridge, Waterloo East. The last train from Eltham to London departs Eltham at 11:22pm, and it's less than a five minute walk from the venue to the station. Alternatively, there are night buses to Blackheath and North Greenwich, and there are driving directions at the website. Parking around the venue is not unlimited but fairly plentiful street parking. You can see a map at Streetmap.com; it's very close to where the A2 meets the South Circular, for those of you who might want to drive.
How much is it going to cost?
On stage night, admission is £2.
What kind of format will they follow?
There will be some room for floor spots before I start and also at half-time. These usually take up maybe fifteen minutes. There will be a raffle; tickets are £1 for five chances, and they usually give away reasonably decent stuff: it's almost always 1) a bottle of scotch or a £10 note; 2) a bottle of red wine; 3) a bottle of white wine; 4) something from the guest; 5) a box of cheap chocolates (which should really be passed around); 6) Anything people decide to throw in. We've had hand-painted vases and free passes to Chiselhurst Caverns in the past few weeks.
What's the atmosphere of the club?
Well, first of all, the Tudor Barn is a beautiful building. It's part of the now council-managed estate that inspired Edith Nesbit's books. Folkmob takes up most of the upstairs. The pub is downstairs, and I guess they have a good selection of whatever and whosis. Upstairs, there are plain tables and chairs and a comfy atmosphere. Secondly, this is not a Trad club by any stretch of the imagination; it's got more singer/songwriter types and people who are doing covers of pop songs or 1960s folk revival stuff than trad folkies. I have heard some very good traditional stuff there, but it's not the homeland for trad a capalla singing the way Sharps is. People are very friendly and relaxed, and there's pretty good community support. I haven't been there on a 'regular' guest night yet, but so many people showed up to their Halloween event, which included a guest/floor spot kind of vibe, that it was difficult for Joe and me to find a place to sit since we came in late. The club does have rules that say you have to join 48 hours in advance of showing up, and although they're rarely enforced, you might want to sign up anyway; membership is free and will probably put you on Mick Woods' email list, but that'll just tell you things like when the club is cancelled at the last minute. There's information about joining the club on the Folkmob website.
As an added incentive, there is a strong possibility (or there was the last time we talked about it), that
Hope to see some of you there. I promise it will be a little fun.
