there have been a few books published, and sue corkin (coincidentally the last person to offer me a job) was responsible for his case at the end of his life. the short summary of it is, hm had organic brain disease which they attempted to resolve surgically by removing apparently-dysfunctional parts of his brain. it turns out that they were the parts that get us from ongoing consciousness into a sense of the passage of time and the formation of memories. but i would really recommend reading further -- you have many options as his case is classic, but i would prefer not to make a recommendation specifically, as my knowledge is mostly not from the most accessible of literatures...
