Joe's Spiral Vest -- The Ribbing
Joe's Spiral Vest -- The Ribbing
Here's the completed ribbing for J's spiral vest. This is a 4-ply (fingering weight) wool, and I'm working on 3.25mm needles. The cast-on is 260 stitches, with an increase to 288 right about now. After that, we get to start the patterning itself. I'm particularly impressed by the very subtle way the Kauni colour changes occurs. I'll copy the pattern I am using into the LJ post, though I'm not sure how much sense it'll make to you. ;)
Joe's Fair Isle Vest -- The Spiral Pattern
Joe's Fair Isle Vest -- The Spiral Pattern
I got this from a website, but the website author says it's from Courtney Davis' Celtic Charted Designs (which I do have somewhere). I think in the blue-grey Kauni it'll look like waves in a cloudy sea.

You can see the motif on a pair of socks with photographs at CDevine.

Anyway, here's the pattern. Heh. Such as it is.

CO 260 sts. Work in k2p2 ribbing for 2".

Inc to 288 sts and begin allover patt: (as above)

Work straight in allover pattern for ______ inches.

CO 10 steek stitches at armholes and neck; work these sts in alternating colours. Mark edges of steeks so pattern doesn’t go awry. OR cont pattern inside neck steek only, with markers for decreases and etc.

Dec 1 st at edge of armhole every 3 rounds until 11 sts have been decreased on each edge of armhole. (44 decrease sts altogether)

AT THE SAME TIME, begin neck decreases to form v-neck.

When neck is complete and shoulders are ready to be grafted, there should be 130 non-steek stitches on the needle.

Graft shoulders together or use 3-needle bindoff from the inside.

Insert guide needles for first armhole, cut steek, knit k2p2 ribbing in one colour only for 1". Repeat with second armhole.

Insert guide needles for neck steek, cut steek, knit k2p2 ribbing in one colour only for 1".

Sew down steeks and cut to within two sts of pattern seam.

Nice Celtic spiral! Will you use it all over, or in bands with a plain bit separating them?

I'm just passing through... but I love this pattern, as well as the link to other Fair Isle works. I just began doing Fair Isle/two colour patterns, so I'm just lapping up everything I see online!

Thanks a lot.
