New Song: Yes
Feb. 8th, 2006 12:05 pmNew Song: Yes
After two years of no songwriting, I finally wrote a song for mine and
filceolaire's first wedding anniversary. It wasn't easy; it took weeks. I hope it'll get easier from here on out. I don't pretend that this is great art, but it was so nice to write a singable song after such a long time. Aside from that precious real love and support, the most beautiful gift that J has given me has been London itself. So this is as much a London song as a J song, and all the images really are straight from our house in Southeast London.
I'm afraid to say it's good to be back. But it might be.
Yes
It's another uneventful London morning
Wrapped around another unpretentious night
And the forecast says spring's just around the corner
You can glimpse her when the frost catches the light
Got the music of the roadwork & the railway
Got the bills, the mortgage, kids and kittens too
Got the grass that still looks greener and a sky that's really blue
Got the satisfying feeling of waking up with you
On a weekday the alarm goes off at seven
If you've got the knack of sleeping through the birds
Yet another day the pressure of what's broken
Gets between the good ideas and the words
See the kitten spotting magpies through the window
See a sea of troubles tossing fit to brew
See the dawn break each day earlier, the sunlight shining through
See the common blue-eyed brilliance that's the way that I see you
All of the hurdles
All of the hoops
All of the red tape
All of the loops
No foreign country, no ocean away
Could stop me from waking up with you every day
It's no tale I'm not a morning person
So you might have thought I said yes in my sleep
I know that's not why you ask again each morning
If I'll stay with you to have and hold and keep
Hear the softness of your snoring after midnight
Hear the quiet of a well that's bottomless
Hear the good, the bad, the shameful, all the secrets we confess
Hear the firm and certain question:
Hear the voice that answers yes.
