Hello, my London Re-enactor Friends!
As many of you know, I'm involved with the Severndroog Castle Building Preservation Trust. The building, and the wood in which it is situated, are very close to my heart, so earlier this year I decided to get involved.
Now, I'm busily preparing marketing materials for our Heritage Lottery Fund bid, and there'll be a separate post coming about that, but here's the immediate question:
Would any of you like to come down and be living history during London Open House Weekend (September 20-21)? We need a few people in 18th century garb (the castle dates from 1784) to come down and provide some colour, plus (if you feel comfortable with it) chat with the crowd. You don't have to act, you don't have to give a big presentation-- you just have to be genteel and properly dressed!
Payment: endless cups of tea, as much cake as I can finagle for you, and my eternal gratitude. For those of you who have read my novel, I will add the extra bonus of the Edge of the Wood tour of Oxleas Wood. We'll start at the Castle, and I'll show you all the sites, trees, spaces, and stories that inspired the novel. If you need a place to stay in London over the weekend, I will provide crash space. You do not need to be at the castle all day, and London Open House volunteer buttons will be provided for you. These ensure that you'll be moved to the front of the queue at any other Open House sites you visit over the weekend. Also, I will personally escort you to The Bull, where Dick Turpin once held the landlady over the fireplace until she told him where the money was hid, and Henry VIII is reputed to have stayed, after the day is over. :-)
In case response is overwhelming (and why wouldn't it be?), I'll cap this at about 15 re-enactors, spread over the two days, although if a Hoarde of you (not a Dark Hoarde!) showed up and were willing to help out, that would be absolutely wonderful.
ETA: Shooters Hill has a long history of highwaymen and footpads, so if any of you can muster up a believable Gentleman of the Road, I'd be even more deeply in your debt. I might even let you play with my iPhone. ;-)
