It's a semi-regular way of sending messages to some people on LJ, since they get the comment emailed to them, but it doesn't remain in the journal/on LJ.

As far as I can tell, if you send someone a private message, it remains on LJ in their inbox until they delete it (and possibly in your "sent" private messages) which means if LJ has problems and the privacy stops working, then it will be visible to everyone.

Sometimes it's just easier if you're 3/4s of the way through writing a reply and then realise you only want the OP to see that response, to finish sending it and then delete it immediately :-)
