[Knitting] Some advance news, plus YARN.

I got a call today from G at I Knit London, who wanted to schedule just about all my proposed classes!

So, here is the docket.

  • Saturday, 7 March: Tunesian Crochet, 12pm-2pm
  • Saturday, 14 March: Knit Fix, 3:30-6pm
  • Saturday, 21 March: Weird Knitting Techniques, 12pm-3pm
  • Saturdays, 4, 11, 18 April: Entrelac Scarf, 12pm-2pm
  • Saturdays, 4, 11, 18 April: Sock Knitting for Beginners, 2:30pm-4:30pm.

Also: I bought yarn. Just look for 'Kauni'. I didn't buy as much as I planned to buy, but it is amazing stuff, and it's further amazing how little you need to make a cardigan! :D

I just googled for knitting classes here. Enough is enough. I am tired of seeing everyone's lovely stuff, and sighing at yarn, and not being able to use it.

There was nothing, but I'm going to ask up at school.

[identity profile] grey-lady.livejournal.com 2009-01-27 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I've done something similar - irritatingly, most of the few I've found are during weekdays, rather than evenings or weekends. I picked up a crochet hook for the first time in years lately, and discovered I can still wield it to some extent, but I just don't know what to make / different effects / etc.

[identity profile] kibbles.livejournal.com 2009-01-27 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a bit lucky; I've got a decent class schedule this semester and have a couple of afternoons free. That gives me a smidge more flexibility than others may have.

I belong to a student organization, called TRiO, which has its own office and student lounge. I think if I ask there, either I will find something, or find knitters or crocheters who may be willing to teach me. Maybe we could get a group going, if I can't find one. (We do things like that all the time in that office. It's a student support group for non traditional, disabled, or 'poor' students.)

[identity profile] telynor.livejournal.com 2009-01-27 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm always willing to take a little time out of a con to knit or crochet. Talis is much more of a crochet goddess, though!

[identity profile] grey-lady.livejournal.com 2009-01-27 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Which reminds me - the Freecycler I got the crochet hooks and a bit of yarn from also had a couple of pairs of knitting needles (just the boring normal straight kind) which I took as well on the possibility you'd be able to find homes for them. If so, I can bring them to the filkcon.

[identity profile] telynor.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 09:44 am (UTC)(link)
I probably can't find homes for them, but lots of charities are happy to receive them to do charity knitting project on, or even to give to women who might not be able to get their own.

[identity profile] grey-lady.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
OK, thanks for letting me know. I may even hold on to them, in case I ever develop enough patience to see if I remember how to knit. :)

[identity profile] dyddgu.livejournal.com 2009-01-27 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm.... I like the sound of the one on the 21st. Let me investigate whether his nibs is out of town as he appears to be on the calendar...

[identity profile] telynor.livejournal.com 2009-01-27 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
You already know the Norwegian Purl, which'll be part of that class. Also, did I teach you to cable without a cable needle?

[identity profile] dyddgu.livejournal.com 2009-01-27 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, a little, but I like coming to a knitting thing, it will make a change, and I am very interested in the knitting backwards thing!
Anyway, I have no idea whether I am cwacn properly ;-)
I'm going to see whether [livejournal.com profile] antarra wants to come along and maybe do a day out.

[identity profile] telynor.livejournal.com 2009-01-27 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)
cwacn
Translation, please? :)

[identity profile] dyddgu.livejournal.com 2009-01-27 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Cabling Without A Cable Needle. I was being lazy ;-)
Though it does look very like the Welsh for a duck noise!
[livejournal.com profile] antarra appears to be free, so I think we will pop along, if you don't mind. :-)

[identity profile] dyddgu.livejournal.com 2009-01-27 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Plus I get to see you and be all awestruck 'cause I found you on wiki via a completely random search!

[identity profile] telynor.livejournal.com 2009-01-27 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Eek. Now I'm scared. Please tell me it wasn't for something .... um, weird.

[identity profile] dyddgu.livejournal.com 2009-01-27 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Nonono, I was just following though some links about Tam Lin, and there you were...

[identity profile] telynor.livejournal.com 2009-01-28 10:52 am (UTC)(link)
Ah! You found my song reprinted on tamlin.org, yes?

[identity profile] dyddgu.livejournal.com 2009-01-28 10:56 am (UTC)(link)
Oooh, I hadn't found that! I found Three Weird Sisters, though :-)
Yay, more Tam Lin!

[identity profile] echoweaver.livejournal.com 2009-01-27 02:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Weird knitting techniques sounds intriguing! Is Knit Fix a class about fixing errors? That also sounds like my kind of thing.

After several swatches, I have decided that I prefer the yarn I bought knitted rather than crocheted. But now I need to get large circular needles!

[identity profile] telynor.livejournal.com 2009-01-27 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Weird Knitting Techniques will include a couple of funky cast-ons, the Norwegian Purl stitch, how to cable without a cable needle, and some other bits and bobs.

Yes, Knit Fix is about fixing errors. Everything from simple dropped stitches to OMG I TWISTED A CABLE THE WRONG WAY WHAT DO I DOOO?

[identity profile] pola-bear.livejournal.com 2009-01-27 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooh, kauni (and oooh, someone who stocks kauni)! I am thinking about baby blankets (did I tell you that Ellie is pregnant again?) and considering using some for that :D. Oh, and I need to learn how to properly fix holes in knitting (holes formed after it's finished).

[identity profile] telynor.livejournal.com 2009-01-28 01:57 pm (UTC)(link)
You didn't tell me Ellie was pregnant again, wow! Yeah, the kauni is lovely, isn't it? And if you check the website, it is really not all that expensive. IKL are thinking about sponsoring it, but I don't know that my 10% discount will make it cheaper than their markup. The Scandinavian Knitting people are based somewhere in Berkshire, and they were really nice when I spoke to them over the phone. For pricing guidelines, look at the free cardigan pattern-- you can get to it from their website. You need only 480 grams of wool for this cardigan in the large size (which works out to be about 120cm around, or 46". Depending on the colour (some colourways are more expensive, oddly), you could make that cardigan for less than £30!

[identity profile] clothsprogs.livejournal.com 2009-01-28 10:16 am (UTC)(link)
And I am now booked and paid for the February 21st and 28th classes (called in at the shop on my way home last night).

Whooot!!

What do I need to bring to those classes with me?

Teddy

[identity profile] telynor.livejournal.com 2009-01-28 10:51 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh, terrific! I'll look forward to seeing you there.

You should bring a doll or teddy bear you want to knit for. If you're knitting for one of your BJDs don't forget I have borrowed two of yours for this class and will be bringing them along to class.

[identity profile] clothsprogs.livejournal.com 2009-01-28 10:59 am (UTC)(link)
Decisions, decisions... I'll probably decide at the last minute in an attempt to avoid making a decision...{g}

{bounce!} Looking forward to it

Teddy

My bears have been squabbling over the honour for weeks, but I think the oldest will win. He actually needs jumpers due to fur-loss, and also wants to show off his Aran.

Chest size 18" or less, I believe you said?

[identity profile] telynor.livejournal.com 2009-01-28 01:55 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not a firm directive, but that's Cody's chest size, and as I can knit pretty much any kind of jumper for him in about two hours, I think most students will be able to do a garment for a bear or doll that size or smaller in twice the time. That gives plenty of time for class instruction, knitting over the week between classes, and finishing up on the second day of the class. Are you taking one, or both jumper classes?

[identity profile] janewilliams20.livejournal.com 2009-01-28 02:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm booked for both. I'm out of practice at knitting, and you're probably going to cring at my technique, so I'll aim for a smaller bear.

[identity profile] telynor.livejournal.com 2009-01-28 02:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Bah. I don't cringe at anybody's 'technique', as long as they're not risking a RSI or a KRI. If you want technique improvement tips, I'll happily offer. And -- although I can't eat regular food, perhaps you and Teddy and I should have some coffee together during the break? (I'm fine with sitting with folks who are eating). :)
