Cognitive disconnects for the weekend:
Oct. 25th, 2005 12:35 amSunday night:
pola_bear phones in a frenzy.
PB: Hey, how much is a regular thing of butter?
Me: Fancy butter, or cheap butter?
PB: Cheap butter.
Me: 88 p!
PB: [laughs at mecruelly]: No, no, how much like how much is in there?
Me: Oh! [more laughter] 250 grams!
Monday afternoon: I've just finished reading an article on the web about a PhD dissertation done by this professor who has nothing in common with me philosophically but is concerned (as I am) about the fact that American children aren't learning folk songs in school anymore. So I go down this list of songs that she recommends with my son. "G, do you know this one?" "Yes." "This one?" "Uh, huh."
I was feeling pretty good about myself until we got to "The Battle Hymn of the Republic."
"G, do you know the Battle Hymn of the Republic?"
"Yeah! It's Da, da, da, da-ti-da, da-ti-DAH!" *to the tune of the Empire theme from Star Wars.....
Boy, there's just no substitute for terrific kids. Luckily, we don't have any un-terrific ones.
