Cody's Fair Isle Vest in progress, Front
That funny seedy stitch bit in the front that doesn't really go with the patterning is a neck steek for a v-neck. The puffy bits at the sides are the armhole steeks. I probably didn't *have* to cast on 10 stitches/steek, but I wanted a lot of edge for seaming. That number of stitches is what Alice Starmore recommends for adult human sized garments. |

Cody's Fair Isle Vest in progress, Back
Here you can see the patterning a bit better because it's not broken up by the neck steek at the front. In this photograph, there are only about four rounds to go before it's time to bind off the shoulders (what there are of them) and cut the steeks. |
So I went into the Starmore and calculated the v-neck steek for Cody's vest before leaving for AXXIdental last week. I even charted it out on knitter's graph paper. Then, I just chose peerie patterns that were divisible into 78 to add some patterning around. Cody's vest doesn't need to be a work of art: it's a prototype for the one I'm going to make
filceolaire as soon as I've satisfied myself I can do this. The patterning around the neck steek has been a bit ticky because of the decreases to create the v-neck, and I'm thinking I may be able to fix that by actually just continuing the pattern into the steek and weaving it a little heavier there. I'm also experimenting with not weaving so much in general so as not to make such a thick, dense fabric when I'm stranding, and that's working out all right.
Tonight I'll cut the steeks and pick up stitches for the arms, then knit the ribbing. The steek that's really scaring me is the neck steek, so I'm saving that one for last. As it's a vest, I'll probably get there tonight; wish me luck.
