I was interviewed for a documentary film about a fannish community [livejournal.com profile] telynor and I are both in, and the filmmakers seemed blown away when I pointed out that one thing most of fandom has in common is massive unresolved high-school trauma.

Overwhelmingly-most people highly active in congoing fandom (note: made-up statistic, based only on my anecdotal experiences!) seem to come from the less 'conventionally popular' end of the high school popularity tree, and because a con is 200-800 'former social misfits' all in one place connecting with each other and making our own fun, that gives it a VERY different vibe than, say, a dental convention or something.
