It's called an umlaut. I have no idea how to do them on a PC, but on a Mac, just press option+u, then type the character you want to be umlauted (in this case the 'i'), and there it'll be.

I'm sure the New York School really wasn't anything like that school in FAME. For starters, life really isn't a musical, and you can't just break into song in the middle of your social studies class, even if you are a talented ute.

I gave up on studying classical voice after Interlochen. I decided I didn't want to be in that competitive world, so despite the fact I probably could have got an acceptance at Oberlin or Eastman, or even Julliard, I didn't do it. I went home, lived with my mom, worked at the local newspaper, and waited a year to go to college, where I concentrated on English and creative writing. It seemed safer. I think if the music department at Interlochen hadn't been so geared toward high art song and opera training, I might have gone in a different direction. Nobody told me, for example, that there were whole degrees in early music. I could have excelled at that.
